Utility File :
Synapse is a new set of 64 programs for the Arturia MatrixBrute.
It provides a lot of ready-to-play sequences that include complete rythmic section with kickdrum, hihat, snare, synth and bass lines. You will also find some arpegiators or single sounds and each of them has been carefully programmed to bring a great experience and show the potential of the MatrixBrute. Of course you can tweak the M1 - M4 macro buttons, they have been optimized for some real time adjustments of the program you are playing, but feel free to adjust anything you want on the MatrixBrute panel, you will have endless time of fun ! |
I strongly recommand to download the PDF file above, in the Utility File section.
It's a document where you will find useful infos on macro functions, and also some few notes / descriptions for each sound.
As any utility file in this website, it's a free access file, so feel free to download it now !

It was a pure joy to develop this soundset, and i hope you will also have fun using it !
Remember that everything can be tweaked and adjusted to taste so prepare yourself hours of experimentations !
Tips & tricks for sequencer / arps programs
Pseudo compression :
You can simulate a compressor with the envelope 2 (VCA) attack, decay and sustain parameters.
For example, if you want more 'snap', you can set the decay and / or sustain lower and choose a very fast attack.
The MatrixBrute has some nice and quick envelopes so you will be able to make anything from snappy to fat and mellow response.
Chopped response :
In conjunction with the Gate parameter of the arpegiator / sequencer, you can use the release segment of the envelope 2 to adjust the tie in your sequence.
Playing in realtime with those two parameters, you will be able to bring some very dynamic variations.
Rythmic changes :
By changing the notes lengths, time signature, tempo, and swing parameters, you will be able to totally create some new rythms in a few seconds.
One word : explore !
External audio input :
You can send an incoming audio signal in the MatrixBrute and it works very well with the all the rythmic sections of this soundset.
Send the input audio via the 'external' button to the Steiner, Ladder or both to add the ice on the cake !
Changing the sequencer length :
By making the sequence shorter / longer you bring new kind of patterns and increase the amount of possibilities.
Choosing some alternate time signature is also a good way to make some original patterns.
Push the 'SEQ' button, then hold the 'SEQ length' button and select where you want the sequence to loop.
You may also want to switch on/off some notes.
M1 - M4 macros :
With all the tips above and the macros buttons, you can create some really complex rythmic patterns and a lot of new drums & bass lines for your tracks.
Take the time to learn the reactions of the macros, what they are doing, and how they change the sounds...

Let it warm !
It's an analog synth, so if you want to enjoy this soundset and play with programs behaving as they are supposed to, you should let your MatrixBrute warm up for about 10 - 15 minutes, as specified in the manual. (Switch it on, and go for a tea ! )
You won't harm anything if you don't but you may play with an out of tune instrument and the experience will be biased...

Installation infos :
To be able to load the sounds into your MatrixBrute, first you will need to :
- Download the 'Midi Control Center' from Arturia Website
- Unzip the file called 'Synapse MatrixBrute' you've downloaded from Barb & Co
When unzipped you will have 3 files :
- Synapse 64 patches (Full Synapse soundset)
- Synapse Bank A-D (Synapse soundset divided in 4 banks of 16 patches)
- Synapse Individual (You have all 64 patches as separates files)
So you have the choice to import in the Midi Control Center what suits you best depending on how you have organised your personnal sounds.
For example, you can rearrange your sounds in the Midi Control Center to make a 256 sounds setup and send it to the MatrixBrute.
Or you can drag and drop sounds from the Midi Control Center to your MatrixBrute, overwriting sounds you don't like or filling empty spaces.
