Hi and welcome to 'Digital Theme Park' for the Kurzweil K2061, K2088, K2700 and PC4 series. This product will take you into various editable programs sorted by categories, called themes here.
Each theme gathers several carefully chosen waveforms that work well together, allowing an easy and fun way to create a large amount of different sounds. The different themes can be dedicated to Choirs, Polyphonic Synths, Pure Digital Bliss...etc. They are based on samples, VA, FM or hybrid sources. Some are quite complex, some others are simpler. Have a look at the PDF files below for more informations on the different elements used to build this set. Join us in the digital roller coaster and have fun ! |

1 > The Main Controls Panel

2 < The Keyboard Controls
In this part, you will find various options to adjust your playing on your instrument. - TRANSPOSE will allow you to shift the whole keyboard by semitones or octaves. - Use the BEND wheel to pitch your sound to 200 cts up, and 1200 cts down. - The VIBRATO wheel adds some pitch modulation. The VIBRATO speed can be adjusted in the parameters page. You can also bring some VIBRATO with the aftertouch. - Select a POLYPHONIC or MONOPHONIC keyboard response with the Variation button. In Monophonic Mode, the keyboard will also play in Legato. The Portamento Rate can be adjusted in the parameters page. Please note when you set your sound in MONO mode, a compressor kicks in. |
3 < Selecting a Theme

4 < The Oscillators Section
This section will allow you to adjust the detune amount for OSC1 and frequency amount (-1 oct/+1 oct) for OSC2. With the Wave Select parameter you can choose a waveform for each oscillator by adjusting fader 1 and fader 2 to the corresponding range of values. Each theme has a different set of waveforms, sorted by categories. You will find samples, FM in various structures, Virtual Analog, etc... as sources for the oscillators waveforms. You will notice that some themes are mixing totally different sources for some interesting and non conventional results. Explore ! |
Once your are happy with the waveforms selection, you are now ready for some more sound adjusments with the other controls. Let's have a look...

5 / Ring Modulation / Amplitude Modulation (RM/AM) > There is a Ring Modulation / Amplitude Modulation function available for OSC1 and OSC2.
The RM/AM frequency parameter allows the RM/AM source to be set from a very low setting, acting like a LFO, to an audio rate frequency. Please note the RM/AM source follows the keyboard tracking. The waveshape of this source is a sine wave and there is a 180 degres phase shift between OSC1 and OSC2. The goal is to achieve some nice pan effects, at low or high rate, because you can spread OSC1 and OSC2 in the stereo field. Fader 3 is used to blend the Ring Modulation and Amplitude Modulation for OSC1. Switch 3 is used to set ON/OFF the same parameters for OSC2. So you can use RM/AM on OSC1 only, or on both oscillators. |
You can see in the 'Choir Designer' theme above that the waveform 'Mellow Vox 2' can be selected for the Sub.
Switch 1 will set the Sub Oscillator ON. Switch 2 will set the frequency of the Sub Oscillator one octave down.
There is an additional parameter in the parameters page called 'Sub Shape'.
Depending of the theme, this parameter can be a HPF filter, a morph function, a shaper, noise amount...etc.
The Sub Oscillator is not affected by the RM/AM section.
The Sub Oscillator envelope and filter settings are linked to OSC1. The resonance has a lower response and the filter has no HPF option.
The Sub Oscillator will always be in the center of the stereo field, it's not affected by the stereo spread function.
Switch 1 will set the Sub Oscillator ON. Switch 2 will set the frequency of the Sub Oscillator one octave down.

7 < The Filter / FM Section
This section allows to adjust independently the cutoff or FM amount and envelope amount in a positive or negative response.
Depending of the theme, you can change the filter or FM settings or have a variation of the oscillators. For example, if you select a theme with some VA waveforms, the variation can change the detune amount, PWM Speed etc... The resonance is common to both oscillators but you can, with switch 6, unlock the resonance control for OSC2. That means that is switch 6 is OFF, the resonance will not respond to the modifications done with the rotary encoder 6. The idea is to have different filter response for OSC1 and OSC2. Please note the resonance can go from -12dB to full auto oscillation, giving a large amount of different textures. To avoid screaming resonant sounds, the volume of the program is lowered the more resonance you add. |

8 < The Envelope Generator
The built-in ADSR envelope controls the global amplitude of the sound.
The signal is also sent to the filter or other functions, depending of the theme, to control the opening and closing of the cutoff frequency or amount of FM. You will use fader 4 and 5 to adjust the amount and polarity of the envelope signal.

Those parameters will cancel the setting of the attack and release signals sent to the amplitude.
You can set the Attack Gate and Release Gate independently, depending of the wanted effect.
In conjunction with the full ADSR and the ability to reverse the envelope to the filter, a large amount of behaviour can be achieved.

Tip, you can enter in the parameters page a value between 0 and 64 to have an alternate effect. Try it out !

> Adjusting the Aux FX parameters
All users can make deeper adjustments of the Aux FX settings in the parameters page.
K2700 users can also use Pads 1-8 for quick changes. The pads allow binary modifications, typically ON/OFF changes.
For example, the Pad 8 is linked to Reverb Time. Using this Pad will allow the K2700 users to switch from the minimum to the maximum value instantly.
Editing this setting thru the parameters page allow any value between 0 and 127, meaning any Reverb Time between the minimum and maximum.
All users can make deeper adjustments of the Aux FX settings in the parameters page.

11 > Additional parameters and more precise editing

In the same way you edit your Aux FX in the parameters page, you can adjust basically any synthesis parameters of your program. That means you can increase the level of complexity of the sound design experience and go around the limitation of the number of hardware controllers of your Kurzweil.
For example Switch 4 and 5 allow to change the filter mode from Low Pass to Band Pass. But if you edit manually the value in the parameters page you can have any filter response from LPF to BPF. By checking this page you will also see some parameters not labeled on the Main Control Panel like Oscillators Crossfade for adjusting the balance between OSC1 and OSC2. You will also see a Drive, a Portamento Rate, available when the program is in Monophonic Mode, a Sub Shape setting or a Vibrato Rate... |
12 > The Bass & Drums Kits alternate controls

- 3 Bass & Drums kits are provided in this set.
The first thing to notice is that there is a split point at C3. Below this split point you will have a playable bass sound. You can select the bass sound with the Fader A. A FM operator is modulated by the core keymap of the bass sound and you can control the FM amount with the first rotary encoder. Starting at C3 and above, you will have some separate drum sounds available on each key. For all the details on these alternate controls for the Bass and Drums programs, please have a look at the picture below. |
13 > Finding Digital Them Park programs in your instrument

If you have a large number of programs in your instrument sometimes you don't remember exactly where you stored a particular sound.
And sometimes you don't remember the name either... That's why all the names of the programs of Digital Theme Park start with the letters 'DTP'. With the search function of your Kurzweil , (ENTER + a category button), you can easily find any programs related to this soundset. TIP ! < In the example on the left, you can see that the theme 'Splitted Virtuality' is used. You can also notice what type of sources are used for OSC1, OSC2 and SUB... |

- Samples have been first recorded in 24 bits / 48 Khz resolution and scaled down to 16 bits / 32 Khz.
- OSC1 and OSC2 will 'cost' 3 layers each and the Sub will use 2 layers, so you will still have 32 voices available if everything is switched ON.
All presets had their volume adjusted in the COMMON page with the Output Gain parameter. Feel free to adjust your own sounds with this parameter when needed.
